Getting There

The Red Reef Trailhead is located within the Red Cliffs Recreation Area, which is situated approximately 20 miles northeast of St. George, Utah. To access the trailhead, take Exit 22 from I-15 and head north on Main Street for 2 miles. Turn right onto 6300 West and drive for 4 miles until you reach the Red Cliffs Recreation Area. There is a day-use fee to enter the recreation area. The trailhead is near the picnic area and the Red Cliffs Campground.

Trail Description

The Red Reef Trail begins at the trailhead and follows the Quail Creek streambed, passing through a lush riparian zone filled with cottonwood trees and willows. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, with a combination of sand, dirt, and slickrock sections.

As you hike along the trail, you'll be surrounded by the vibrant red sandstone cliffs, which are characteristic of the Red Cliffs Recreation Area. The trail gradually ascends, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the Pine Valley Mountains to the north.

Approximately 1 mile into the hike, you'll reach a fork in the trail. To continue on the Red Reef Trail, take the left fork, which leads to a series of pools and cascades, known as the Red Reef Pools. This area is a popular spot for swimming and cooling off, especially during the warmer months. Please note that water levels and flow can vary depending on the season and recent precipitation.

Beyond the pools, the trail becomes more challenging and involves some scrambling and route-finding. The trail continues up the canyon, requiring hikers to climb up a short waterfall using a fixed rope. This section is moderately difficult and should only be attempted by experienced hikers who are comfortable with scrambling and have a good level of physical fitness.

After the waterfall, the trail eventually reaches the end of the canyon, where you can either retrace your steps back to the trailhead or continue exploring the area via off-trail routes. Please exercise caution and good judgment when venturing off-trail, as the terrain can be difficult to navigate and may require advanced hiking skills.

Tips for a Memorable Hike

  1. Wear appropriate footwear: The trail features a mix of sand, dirt, and slickrock, so sturdy hiking shoes with good traction are essential for a comfortable and safe hike.
  2. Bring plenty of water: Desert conditions can be deceptively dry, so it's important to stay hydrated by bringing enough water for the entire hike.
  3. Use sun protection: The desert sun can be intense, even during cooler months. Remember to apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and use sunglasses for protection.
  4. Check weather conditions: Flash floods can be a risk in desert canyons, especially during monsoon season (July to September). Always check the weather forecast before embarking on your hike and heed any warnings from local authorities.

  6. Bring a camera: The Red Reef Trail offers stunning views and unique photo opportunities, so be sure to capture your experience with a camera or smartphone.
  7. Start early: To avoid the midday heat and enjoy cooler temperatures, it's best to start your hike early in the day.
