Getting There
Yant Flat is situated about 25 miles northeast of St. George, Utah. To access the trailhead, take UT-18 north from St. George to the town of Central. Turn right onto Silver Reef Road, drive for 1.4 miles, and then turn left onto Forest Service Road 032 (also known as Cottonwood Road). Follow this dirt road for approximately 10.2 miles until you reach the trailhead. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, as the road can be rough and uneven.
Trail Description
The Yant Flat trail begins at the trailhead and follows an old jeep track through pinion and juniper trees. The trail is mostly sandy and relatively flat, making for a comfortable hike. However, it is not well-marked, so be sure to follow cairns and use a GPS or map to help navigate.
After about 1.4 miles, you'll reach the edge of the Yant Flat sandstone formations. Here, the terrain changes dramatically, with striking red, white, and yellow sandstone cliffs sprawling out before you. This is where the exploration truly begins, as there is no designated trail within the Yant Flat area.
Take your time wandering around the sandstone formations, admiring the intricate patterns and vivid colors. The "Candy Cliffs" area is particularly popular for photography, with its swirling patterns and unique textures. Be cautious when walking on the sandstone, as it can be slick and uneven.
When you've finished exploring, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. Keep in mind that there is little shade in the area, so plan accordingly and consider starting your hike early in the day to avoid the heat.
