About

Discover a Hidden Gem Along the Virgin River

Tucked along the Virgin River in the small town of Virgin, Sheep Bridge Park offers a refreshing alternative to the busier attractions nearby. This local favorite provides easy river access where families can wade in shallow sections, swimmers can find deeper pools, and everyone can enjoy the scenic red rock views without fighting for parking or photo spots.

River Activities and Swimming

The park's main draw is its direct access to the Virgin River. Here, the water creates natural swimming holes and gentle rapids perfect for cooling off during southern Utah's hot summers. Some visitors bring tubes to float downstream, while others simply wade in the shallows or relax on the riverbank. The currents can be strong in places with sudden drop-offs. Caution is advised, especially with children. During peak summer heat, it's wise to check current water conditions. Algae levels can occasionally make swimming inadvisable.

Park Amenities and Camping

Beyond the river access, the park serves as an excellent picnic spot with basic facilities including restrooms at the parking area. The surrounding BLM land also allows for dispersed camping, making it a popular overnight spot for those seeking a more rustic experience. The access road can be rough and bumpy. Drive carefully, especially if you're planning to camp with an RV or trailer.

Location and Best Times to Visit

Located just 15 minutes west of Springdale and Zion's main entrance, Sheep Bridge Park makes an ideal stop. It's perfect for those wanting to experience the Virgin River without the crowds of the Narrows or Riverside Walk. It's particularly appealing in the early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the surrounding cliffs and the temperatures are more comfortable.

Perfect For:

  • A quick swimming break

  • A peaceful lunch spot

  • A base camp for exploring the greater Zion area

Whether you're looking for a quick swimming break, a peaceful lunch spot, or a base camp for exploring the greater Zion area, this unassuming park delivers a genuinely local experience.

What to See at Sheep Bridge Park

Sheep Bridge Park sits along the Virgin River in the small town of Virgin, providing direct access to the river and its red rock surroundings without the crowds of the more visited access points in the area. The park's setting is the draw: the river moves through a canyon-framed corridor with cliffs visible on both sides, and the combination of moving water and rock gives the site a different character from static desert viewpoints. The river creates natural swimming holes and shallow wading zones, with deeper pools accessible to stronger swimmers. The surrounding BLM land allows for dispersed camping, extending the park's utility beyond a day stop. Restrooms are available at the parking area.

Visitor Tips

  • The Virgin River current can be stronger than it appears, particularly in spring during snowmelt season and during the summer monsoon period — check the water's movement before wading with children, and watch for sudden drop-offs in areas that look shallow.
  • Regional cyanobacteria concerns affect the Virgin River; avoid submerging your head in the water and do not filter river water for drinking. Bring your own water for the visit.
  • The access road to the park can be rough; vehicles with low ground clearance should approach slowly, and large RVs or trailers should assess the road condition before committing to the full drive in.
  • This is an early morning or late afternoon destination for photography — the light on the canyon walls and river is strongest at the beginning and end of the day, and midsummer midday heat on the exposed riverbank can be intense.

Planning Your Visit

Sheep Bridge Park is located in Virgin, approximately 15 minutes west of Springdale and Zion's main entrance. It is a self-managed stop with no shuttle access, no entry process, and a dirt access road to the river that can be rough in sections — drive carefully, especially if you are towing a trailer or driving a low-clearance vehicle. Early morning and late afternoon visits are recommended in summer when the light on the surrounding cliffs is most striking and temperatures are more manageable. The park functions well as a quick stop between Springdale and Hurricane, or as a base for those camping on the adjacent BLM land.

BLM land and was a great hidden gem to camp for the night. The road is bumpy, so be cautious. But ultimately, the best spot!
