Riverside camping beneath towering red cliffs with sites for tents and RVs
Watchman Campground offers one of the most coveted camping experiences in the national park system, placing visitors directly inside Zion Canyon with the Virgin River flowing nearby and the park's iconic sandstone cliffs rising in every direction. The campground's 176 sites accommodate both tent campers and RVs, with many spots featuring electrical hookups and shade from mature cottonwoods and willows.
The location proves ideal for experiencing Zion at its most peaceful moments. After day-trippers depart, campers enjoy exclusive access to the canyon during golden hour and dawn, when the Watchman formation and surrounding peaks glow in spectacular light. The campground sits adjacent to the Pa'rus Trail, allowing easy walking or biking access to the visitor center and Springdale without needing to drive. Wildlife frequently passes through, from mule deer grazing between sites to the diverse bird population that delights early risers.
Sites vary from open spots perfect for stargazing to more sheltered areas beneath the trees. The Virgin River provides a soothing soundtrack, particularly pleasant from the loops closest to the water. Modern restrooms with flush toilets and drinking water are distributed throughout, though showers aren't available on-site.
Securing a reservation requires planning, as sites book months in advance during peak season. The campground operates year-round, with winter offering a quieter experience and easier availability. Spring and fall provide ideal weather, while summer sites beneath the cottonwoods offer welcome shade during hot afternoons. For those seeking an authentic Zion experience beyond the typical hotel stay, Watchman Campground delivers unmatched access to the park's natural rhythms.

Great stay – highly recommended! We had a fantastic stay with an electric hookup. As Europeans, we only needed a simple adapter to use the standard power outlet, which was very convenient. The location is amazing—right by the river with beautiful views of the Watchman. Everything is within easy reach: bike rentals, restaurants, and the park entrance are all just a short walk or ride away. For such a prime location, the campground is very reasonably priced. Cell phone reception was excellent, and showers are available nearby at one of the outfitters in town for a small fee, just a short distance away. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend this campground to anyone visiting the area! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
