Kolob Campground sits at 8,100 feet elevation along Kolob Reservoir, offering a refreshing escape from the desert heat below. The higher altitude means temperatures run 15-20 degrees cooler than Zion's main canyon, making summer nights actually comfortable for sleeping. Pine and aspen trees provide natural shade and that mountain camping feel you don't get in the park proper.

What to Do Here

The reservoir is the main draw here. You can fish for rainbow trout right from your campsite, launch a kayak or paddleboard, or just enjoy the water views.

Sites are compact and close together (this isn't wilderness camping), but the lakefront location and mountain setting make up for the lack of privacy. Camp hosts keep things running smoothly and help newcomers navigate the layout.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

The drive up Kolob Terrace Road is scenic in itself, winding through different elevation zones as you climb out of the desert. You'll pass through a section of Zion National Park on the way up, and several trailheads for less-crowded Zion hikes are accessible from this road.

It's about 45 minutes from Springdale but feels like a different world entirely. The campground fills up quickly in summer, so reservations are essential if you want that cool mountain refuge during peak season.

The campsites are close together but the camp is really well maintained. The camp host, Norm, was amazing too. We will definitely come back.

Our first time here. Now to each is their own. For us, the campsites are so close together that we could easily hear everyone’s conversations. It’s a small campground all jammed together, forget your privacy. It is nice that the lake is right there, we paddle boarded and fished. One day we took our e-bikes and went into Zion. The campground is about 35 minutes away. Again, we were there on Labor Day weekend and all sites were full. Not the quiet peaceful outdoors we look for but that might be ok with you. We wouldn’t come back just because of that and like more room to ourselves. The port-a-potties are sitting on a trailer and got pretty gross after a few days with a full camp. The camp host was nice and came around from time to time.
