About
Wire Mesa is a BLM trail on the outer rim of a sandstone mesa above Rockville, reached via the Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Byway southwest of town. The roughly 7-mile loop mixes dirt tread with slickrock through juniper and pinyon pine, with a technical, rocky start that eases into easier walking through the middle and end — and wide views down onto Rockville and into Zion National Park.
Good to know
- The access road requires a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle
- Popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and birders
- Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours for the full loop
- This is BLM land bordering the park, not an NPS-maintained trail — carry your own water and navigation
