Zion's high country, minus the crowds

About
Wildcat Canyon Trailhead sits on Kolob Terrace Road, about 15.8 miles north of the turnoff in the town of Virgin, in the high-elevation Kolob Terrace section of Zion, a different world from the main canyon, with forest and meadow instead of red rock walls. The trail itself runs about 6 miles as a wide, rocky connector between the trailhead and the West Rim Trail near Lava Point, and forms part of the long-distance Trans-Zion Trek route.
Good to know
- It's the starting point for several of the area's better-known routes, including Northgate Peaks Trail and the approaches to the Left and Right Forks of North Creek (the Subway)
- Two vault toilets are at the trailhead parking lot; overnight backpacking anywhere past here requires a wilderness permit
- Kolob Terrace Road can be snow-covered and the trailhead inaccessible in winter
