West Rim Trailhead North
Where the West Rim Trail begins, near Lava Point
About
This is the trailhead for the top-down approach to Zion's West Rim Trail, sitting about half a mile southeast of Lava Point at the end of Kolob Terrace Road (also signed as Kolob Reservoir Road), roughly 20 miles north of the town of Virgin. Most hikers doing the full traverse arrange a shuttle drop-off here rather than driving their own vehicle, since the hike finishes down in Zion Canyon.
The Wildcat Canyon Trail also starts nearby and shares the first stretch of trail before splitting off, so watch for the junction a few minutes in if you're headed for the West Rim proper.
Kolob Terrace Road closes for winter well before reaching this point — typically not plowed the last half mile — so from late fall through spring the trailhead is only reachable by snowshoe or snowmobile. Check road status before planning a trip outside summer months.
