The Subway Top-Down Approach

The top-down route to the Subway is a canyoneering trip, not a hike — it starts at the Wildcat Canyon Trailhead, roughly 15.5 miles up Kolob Terrace Road from Virgin, and finishes at the Left Fork Trailhead about 9.5 to 10 miles later. Expect several short rappels (up to 30 feet), cold-water swims, down-climbing, and real route-finding through a narrow, sculpted canyon on the park's west side. A Zion wilderness permit is required for every trip through the Left Fork/Subway corridor, with 80 spots issued per day split between this route and the non-technical bottom-up hike, allocated through the NPS seasonal and last-minute lotteries. Spring runoff can make the canyon dangerous; most guides recommend early summer through fall instead.
