The Bishopric

A remote sandstone dome cluster reached only by rappel and technical climbing.

About

The Bishopric is a cluster of remote sandstone domes deep in Zion's backcountry, roughly 500 feet of relief split into separate summits — Bishopric West, Bishopric North, and a formation nicknamed the Hamster. There's no trail anywhere near it; this is a technical mountaineering objective, not a hike.

What reaching it actually involves

  • The approach requires rappelling about 300 feet into Phantom Valley, skirting the Inclined Temple formation, and climbing back out of a slot canyon before you're even at the base.
  • Bishopric West tops out with a Class 5 (roughly 5.6) crux; routes on the other summits range from Class 2 to Class 5 depending on the line chosen.
  • The first documented ascent took a three-day effort — a fair indicator of how remote and committing this objective is.
  • This is a listing for experienced canyoneers and climbers researching an objective, not a general visitor destination.
