Tabernacle Dome

Tabernacle Dome is the rounded sandstone peak that rises beside Kolob Terrace Road about 9 to 11 miles north of Virgin, Utah — close enough to the pavement that most visitors experience it only as a striking roadside profile. Mormon ranchers named it for its resemblance to the domed roof of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

Reaching the summit is a technical undertaking, not a hike. Every route tops out at Class 5 climbing (roughly 5.2 to 5.4), and parties typically spend three to four hours getting up and back down with rope and rack. This isn't a walk-up peak.

What you'll see

• From the base: a clean, rounded dome visible for miles along Kolob Terrace Road
• From the summit, climbers only: views west to the Pine Valley Mountains and east across Zion's west rim and the Guardian Angels peaks
