Smith Mesa

Smith Mesa is a red-dirt plateau west of Zion National Park, reached from roads near Virgin, Utah — Kolob Terrace Road on the east side, Mesa Road on the west. The route climbs through pinyon-juniper woodland before opening onto broad mesa-top meadows.

Why people come here

• Open views stretch toward Zion to the east and the Kolob Terrace high country to the north — a different vantage than anything inside the park itself.
• The road is graded dirt, manageable by car in dry conditions and popular with gravel cyclists and overlanders; it turns greasy and difficult when wet.
• Dispersed camping is common along the mesa, with no designated sites or facilities.

Smith Mesa sits outside Zion's boundary, so there's no park fee or ranger presence out here — bring your own water and a plan, especially if rain is possible.
