Sheep, Mountain Zion

This point sits in the rugged backcountry east of Zion Canyon, in the stretch of park between the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel and the East Entrance that the National Park Service points to as prime bighorn sheep habitat. There's no maintained trail or marked route here — it's slickrock and brush country, part of the East Rim's broader plateau system.

Zion's desert bighorn were reintroduced to the park in 1978 after being wiped out locally, and the population, now several hundred strong, spends much of its time on exactly this kind of exposed sandstone terrain, where sure footing on steep rock keeps them safe from predators. If you're driving the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway through this section, scan the cliff bands rather than expecting a trailhead sign — this is wildlife-viewing terrain, not a built hiking destination.
