Scoggins Wash Trail

Scoggins Wash is a quiet desert-wash hike in the southwest corner of Zion National Park, reached from the Coalpits Wash Trailhead on Highway 9 between Virgin and Rockville. Most hikers start by following the wide, sandy Coalpits Wash upstream for about 1.75 miles to where Scoggins Wash splits off to the east, then continue up the narrower upper reaches beneath views of Zion's southern peaks.

What to know

• A full loop up Scoggins and back down Coalpits runs roughly 12 to 13 miles round trip and takes most hikers 4 to 5 hours — plan it as a long day hike.
• The lower wash is easy, sandy walking with no technical obstacles; the upper wash has boulders and occasional pools.
• There is little to no reliable water and almost no shade — this hike is fully exposed to the sun.
• Save it for cool weather or winter; it's not a good pick on a hot summer day.
