Roof Peak
An off-trail scramble behind Zion's skyline
About
Roof Peak is one of four sandstone summits, along with Destination, Gifford, and Hepworth peaks, that make up an unofficial backcountry route in the peaks behind Zion Canyon's skyline, hidden behind the ridges of Gifford Canyon near Springdale. These are not official National Park Service trail names; they're informal designations used by the canyoneering and scrambling community for a loop that isn't marked or maintained.
Reaching Roof Peak means off-trail travel with long stretches of class 3 scrambling and real route-finding, not a maintained hike. It's a serious backcountry objective for experienced scramblers with navigation skills, not a casual outing, and anyone attempting it should carry a wilderness permit where required and go in with a realistic sense of the exposure involved.
