About
Red Butte Wilderness is a 1,537-acre BLM wilderness area immediately south of Zion's Kolob section, reached via a dirt road off Kolob Terrace Road about 12.5 miles from the Kolob Reservoir turnoff near Virgin, Utah.
What to expect
- The hike to Red Butte itself is rated hard: about 2.9 miles round trip with roughly 1,171 feet of elevation gain and route-finding that isn't always obvious.
- A high-clearance 4x4 is recommended for the access road; a green gate marks the wilderness boundary, beyond which no motorized vehicles are allowed.
- The route passes Red Window Arch along the way.
This is BLM land, not park land, so there's no NPS infrastructure here — no visitor center, no maintained facilities, and no cell coverage to count on. Plan accordingly and let someone know your route before you head out.
