Poverty Gulch Overlook Trail

Poverty Gulch sits in the quiet canyon country east of Zion National Park's boundary, on Bureau of Land Management and Utah State Trust land above Parunweap Canyon and the East Fork of the Virgin River. The route follows an old ranching track south from Highway 9, crossing sand and slickrock into a narrow side canyon with a modest stream. There's no visitor center, signage, or maintained tread out here — this is backcountry adjacent to the park, not an NPS trail, and conditions depend heavily on recent weather; wash crossings turn to mud after rain.

What to expect

• Unmaintained route, high-clearance recommended, no facilities
