Mountain of Mystery

Mountain of Mystery is a Navajo sandstone summit rising more than 2,100 feet above the floor of the Virgin River's Narrows, wedged between Orderville Canyon to the north and Mystery Canyon to the south. The name was officially adopted in 1934. It isn't a hiking destination in the usual sense — there's no maintained trail to the top. What most visitors see of it is the view up at its walls from the canyon floor, while canyoneers and technical climbers reach the summit or descend through Mystery Canyon via roped routes that require permits and real rope-work experience.

• Mystery Canyon has a daily permit cap and ends with a rappel into the Narrows
