Mount Kinesava

Mount Kinesava rises 7,285 feet immediately west of Springdale, towering roughly 3,400 feet above the town and the floor of Zion Canyon. It's named for Kinesava, the Southern Paiute deity associated with lightning and rockslides.

What to expect on the mountain

• There's no maintained trail to the summit — the route is largely off-trail and steep, with about 1,000 feet of Class 3-4 scrambling near the top.
• It's not heavily exposed, but the terrain demands sure footing and route-finding experience; this is a backcountry scramble, not a casual day hike.
• Native American petroglyphs are etched into the rock on the mountain's upper plateau, evidence that people have climbed here for a very long time.
• Spring and fall are the most favorable seasons; summer heat and winter ice both add real risk to the scramble sections.
