Lava Point Overlook A

Lava Point sits at 7,890 feet off Kolob Terrace Road, the high point of Zion accessible by vehicle — about 25 miles north of Virgin and roughly an hour and twenty minutes from the South Entrance.

What you get for the drive

• A 360-degree view that takes in the Kolob Fingers, the West Temple, the Towers of the Virgin, and on a clear day the Kaibab Plateau near the Grand Canyon's North Rim.
• It's a short walk, not a hike — about 0.3 miles from the parking area to the viewpoint.
• The overlook is typically open May through September; the unpaved stretch of Kolob Terrace Road is impassable when wet, and only the first 14 miles get plowed in winter.
• Lava Point Campground sits nearby and now requires an advance reservation through Recreation.gov, $25 a night.
