About

Kayenta Trail climbs out of the Zion Canyon floor along a shelf of sandstone steps, tracing the Virgin River before it connects into the Emerald Pools network. It's a moderate 1.8-mile round trip with about 204 feet of elevation gain, and most hikers cover it in two to three hours, longer if you stop at the pools or linger over the canyon views along the way.

Getting There

Start at the Kayenta and West Rim trailhead at The Grotto, shuttle stop 6. Cross the road, use the crosswalk to the bridge over the Virgin River, then bear left up the sandstone steps to begin climbing. The path mixes packed sand, slickrock, and rocky sections, and there are long drop-offs in places, so keep an eye on kids and watch your footing where the trail edges close to the ledge.

Why Hike It

The payoff is the view back across Zion Canyon as you gain elevation, plus easy access to all three Emerald Pools. Kayenta links to the Middle Pool, which branches to both the Lower and Upper Pools, so you can loop back instead of retracing your steps. Many hikers use it as the quieter approach to the pools, skipping the crowds at the main trailhead near Zion Lodge.
