Gregory Butte

Gregory Butte rises roughly 7,700 feet above La Verkin Creek in Zion's Kolob Canyons district, the less-visited section of the park reached from the I-15 entrance rather than the main south entrance near Springdale. Hikers on the La Verkin Creek Trail see it as a prominent formation along the route toward Kolob Arch.

Like most of the rock towers in this area, Gregory Butte is a technical climbing objective rather than a hiking destination — the approach gully was used in the 1950s to measure the span of nearby Kolob Arch, one of the longest freestanding arches in the world, though the butte itself wasn't actually climbed until 2016.

For most visitors, the butte is a scenic marker along the trail: a good reference point for gauging distance on the out-and-back hike to Kolob Arch, rather than a summit to plan for.
