Englestead Trailhead Loop

Englestead Hollow, sometimes called Englestead Canyon, is a technical canyoneering route on Zion's east side, known for one of the more dramatic openings of any canyon in the park: an initial rappel of about 280 feet into a narrow vertical slot. From there it's roughly ten more rappels — split between the upper and lower slots — over about three miles to the junction with Orderville Canyon.

The upper section sits on BLM land outside the park boundary, but the lower canyon drops into Zion National Park proper, which means a Zion canyoneering permit is required to run the full route. This is advanced terrain reserved for experienced canyoneers with solid rappelling and rope skills — not a hiking trail.

Most parties exit by hiking up Orderville Canyon or continuing down through the Narrows to the Temple of Sinawava, and arranging a shuttle from a Springdale outfitter beforehand makes logistics considerably easier.
