Emerald Pools Trailhead

Zion Canyon's busiest trailhead, right at the lodge

About

The Emerald Pools Trailhead sits across the road from Zion Lodge, the starting point for the park's most popular short hike system. From here, trails split off to the Lower, Middle, and Upper Emerald Pools, with options ranging from a wide, largely flat walk to a moderate climb over sand and rock to the highest pool. Restrooms, water, and food are all available at the lodge across the street.

What to know

  • Reached via shuttle stop 5 (Zion Lodge) or stop 6 (The Grotto) during shuttle season — private vehicle access to this stretch of road is restricted most of the year
  • The Lower Pool loop is about 1.2 miles round trip and largely accessible; the Upper Pool add-on is steeper and less even underfoot
  • Seasonal waterfalls above the pools run best after snowmelt or recent rain
