East Rim Trail - Closed Indefinitely

The East Rim Trail historically connected the Weeping Rock area of Zion Canyon up through Echo Canyon to the park's east entrance, linking to routes toward Observation Point, Cable Mountain, and Stave Spring. A large rockfall in August 2019 buried the lower trail and damaged the Weeping Rock area, and the lower section has remained closed ever since while geologists assess the risk of further rockfall from the cliffs above.

As of early 2026, this closure is still in effect and there is no announced reopening date; park geologists have noted the lower trail may not reopen if the rockfall hazard persists. Hikers wanting to reach Observation Point should use the East Mesa Trail instead, which remains open and approaches from the plateau above rather than through Echo Canyon. Always check current NPS trail conditions before planning a route in this area.
