Deertrap Mountain Trail

Deertrap Mountain sits on the East Rim of Zion National Park, a remote viewpoint with a head-on look at Angels Landing across the canyon. The name comes from Southern Paiute hunters, who once used the terrain here to herd deer into a trap. It's one of the quieter corners of the park — you'll see far fewer people here than on Zion's two most crowded hikes.

How to reach it

• Stave Spring Trailhead: the shortest option, at about 10.5 miles round trip
• East Entrance Trailhead: accessible year-round and the most straightforward logistically
• Via Weeping Rock: the lower East Rim Trail has been closed, so check current park conditions before planning this approach

Standard park entrance fees apply and no permit is needed for a day hike. From the main junction, a rocky promontory about half a mile north gives panoramic views over central Zion Canyon.
