A steep cinder-cone climb away from the crowds

About

Crater Hill is a volcanic cinder cone in Zion's southwest desert section, reached by a moderate 2.4-mile round-trip hike with about 705 feet of elevation gain — figure 1.5 to 2 hours. The ascent is steep and loose underfoot, so it's more of a workout than the distance suggests.

From the summit area, some hikers continue east toward Coalpits Wash, about 2.3 miles further, but there's no official trail for that stretch — just a faint path of use across open desert. Anyone continuing that way should be comfortable with basic route-finding and carry more water than they think they'll need; this corner of the park has no shade and no shuttle access.

Crater Hill is a good option for visitors who want a real climb without the crowds of the main canyon trails.
