Chinle Trailhead

The Chinle Trailhead sits in a residential pocket of Rockville, reached off State Route 9 by turning onto Anasazi Way just outside Zion National Park's south entrance. From here, the Chinle Trail runs about 16 miles round trip through open desert, crossing Huber, Scoggins, and Coalpits washes on its way to a scattered petrified forest and the base of Mount Kinesava.

Good to know

• Plan on roughly seven hours for the full round trip; many hikers split it into an overnight with a wilderness permit
• Six designated backcountry campsites are available along the route — pick one up at the Wilderness Desk or Kolob Visitor Center
• The trail is long, exposed, and shadeless — carry more water than you think you need
• Fall and spring are the most comfortable seasons; summer heat here is serious
