A ridge walk to a distant look at Checkerboard Mesa.

About
Known locally as the Checkerboard View Trail, this 3.5-mile loop climbs a low ridge on Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort property east of the park near Orderville, gaining a modest 219 feet before opening to a view of Checkerboard Mesa's cross-hatched sandstone in the distance inside Zion National Park. It's an easy, roughly hour-long walk shared by hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers.
Good to know
- The trail is on Zion Ponderosa's private resort land, not an NPS trail, though the payoff view looks into the park.
- Dogs are welcome on leash, unlike most trails inside Zion National Park itself, where dogs are largely prohibited.
- Terrain is a mix of open ridge and pinyon-juniper woodland typical of the East Zion plateau.
- It connects into the broader Zion Ponderosa and Applecross trail network for a longer day out.
