Cave Knoll

Cave Knoll is a 6,486-foot sandstone summit in Cave Valley, on the Kolob Terrace side of Zion National Park northwest of Springdale. It takes its name from a large cave-like slot cut into the base of its west face. There's no maintained trail to the top — reaching it is off-trail scrambling over Navajo sandstone, an outing suited to experienced route-finders rather than casual visitors.

What to know

• Accessed via Kolob Terrace Road out of the town of Virgin, not the main Zion Canyon entrance
• No signed trail or distance markers; this is backcountry navigation, not a hike with a marked trailhead
• Spring and fall are the more comfortable seasons — Kolob Terrace sits at higher, cooler elevation than the main canyon
