Campground and Overlook Connector Trail

This short connector links Lava Point Campground to Lava Point Overlook, in the high, pine-covered Kolob Terrace district of Zion National Park. It's about a ten-minute walk, not a backcountry trek — the kind of trail campers take straight from their tent site to catch sunset over Zion Canyon from a basalt outcrop roughly 7,890 feet above sea level.

Lava Point itself is a world apart from the sandstone floor of the main canyon: cooler, forested with ponderosa pine and aspen, and reached only by the winding, unpaved Kolob Terrace Road (vehicles over 19 feet aren't permitted on the approach). The campground has six primitive tent sites, pit toilets, and no potable water, so this connector serves a small, self-sufficient crowd rather than day-trip traffic. The same trailhead continues on as Barney's Trail toward the West Rim.
