Big Bend Viewpoint
Where Zion Canyon opens wide beneath Cable Mountain
About
Big Bend marks one of the widest points in Zion Canyon, where the Virgin River curves beneath the sheer walls near Angels Landing and the Organ. It's long been a natural pull-off for canyon views and a jumping-off point for trails climbing toward the East Rim.
That access has been limited since August 2019, when a large rockfall off Cable Mountain buried the nearby Weeping Rock area in debris. The lower East Rim Trail connection from this part of the canyon has been closed ever since, so it's no longer possible to hike down to Big Bend from Cable Mountain, Deertrap Mountain, or Observation Point via that route — those destinations are still reachable, but only from the East Entrance side of the park.
Check current NPS trail status before planning a route through here, since closures in this area have been long-running rather than short-term.
