Barracks Overlook
A remote overlook on the East Fork's narrow Barracks stretch
(0)
About
Barracks Overlook sits along the remote East Fork of the Virgin River, in the stretch known as the Barracks — a narrow, dramatic canyon section that has drawn comparisons to the North Fork Narrows without the crowds. It's part of the roughly 20-mile East Fork backpacking route, most of which lies on BLM land just outside Zion's boundary before entering the park near Labyrinth Falls.
Good to know
- No maintained trail leads here — access is by the same remote, off-trail route used for the East Fork backpacking trip
- No NPS permit is required for the East Fork route itself, since most of it sits outside the park boundary
- Downstream, Parunuweap Canyon proper is closed to public entry as a Natural Research Area
This is backcountry in the true sense: strenuous, remote, and largely unmarked. It's a real and rewarding destination for experienced off-trail hikers, not a roadside stop.
