About

Barney's Trail is the short connector — about a mile to a mile and a half — that links Lava Point Campground to the official start of the West Rim Trail in Zion's Kolob Terrace district. The trailhead sits just past campsite #2 at Lava Point, and most of the route follows a wide gravel road before it meets the West Rim Trail proper.

It's a functional trailhead rather than a scenic destination in its own right: hikers use it when the spur road to the main West Rim trailhead is impassable, adding an extra mile and a half of walking from Lava Point itself. Lava Point, at nearly 7,900 feet, is reached via Kolob Terrace Road out of Virgin — this is drive-up backcountry access, unrelated to the shuttle system that serves the main canyon, and the road isn't maintained through winter.
