Angels Landing Trailhead

The Angels Landing Trailhead starts at the Grotto shuttle stop in Zion Canyon, accessible only by the park shuttle for most of the year since private vehicles are restricted on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The trail climbs switchbacks through Refrigerator Canyon and up Walter's Wiggles to Scout Lookout, then continues along a narrow sandstone fin with chain handholds and steep drop-offs to the summit, one of the most exposed maintained trails in the National Park System.

Good to know

• A permit is required for anyone hiking beyond Scout Lookout on the chained section to Angels Landing, issued through a seasonal lottery and a day-before lottery on Recreation.gov.
• There's a non-refundable application fee, plus a per-person fee for those awarded a permit.
• The hike to Scout Lookout itself does not require a permit.
• Check current NPS shuttle schedules and permit rules before planning a visit, since both have changed in recent years.
