Amphitheater Temple

This is a remote point in the high backcountry above Zion Canyon's east side, in the same general plateau country as Wynopits Mountain and the Kolob Deer Haven area. It doesn't turn up in hiking guides or on trail maps with any established route description, and there's no maintained trail to it — reaching it would mean off-trail travel through brush and slickrock, the kind of terrain that keeps this corner of the park nearly visitor-free.

Zion's backcountry plateau spans a huge elevation range, from the roughly 4,000-foot canyon floor to points well above 7,000 feet, and features like this one sit in that upper zone — a very different environment from the sandstone narrows most visitors picture when they think of Zion. Anyone heading into this area should have off-trail navigation experience and a wilderness permit if overnighting; there's no signage and no crowds.
