Sawmill Springs

A seasonal lifeline for West Rim backpackers.

About

Sawmill Springs is a backcountry water source and campsite — Campsite #9 — on the West Rim Trail in Zion's Kolob Terrace district, about a mile down-trail from the Lava Point trailhead. A short spur path drops west off the main trail into a shallow draw to reach the spring itself.

What to know

  • Flow is seasonal — reliable in spring, but can run dry later in the hiking season
  • Water here, like all backcountry sources in Zion, needs to be treated before drinking
  • Used mainly by Trans-Zion and West Rim Trail backpackers, not day hikers

It's a practical waypoint rather than a scenic destination: useful if you're planning a multi-day Kolob Terrace backpacking trip and need to factor in water resupply, but not worth a dedicated visit on its own. Check current water reports with the park's wilderness desk before relying on it.
