About

Jolley Gulch is a dramatic slot canyon on Zion's east side, reachable two ways: an overlook hike along the East Rim Trail, or a technical canyoneering descent into the slot itself.

The two ways to see it

  • The hiking route starts at the East Rim Trailhead, a short spur off the road about 200 feet west of the park's east entrance, and follows a wide former logging road roughly 5.8 miles round trip to a viewpoint above the canyon.
  • Years of water working through the sandstone have carved a narrow, winding passage that opens into a broader valley — the view from the rim gives a good sense of its scale.
  • Descending into the slot itself is a technical canyoneering route with two rappels (about 160 feet and 100 feet); it requires a wilderness permit from the park, available online or at the visitor center.
