Getting There
The Canyon Overlook Trail is located in the east side of Zion National Park along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (UT-9). To access the trailhead, enter the park through the east entrance and drive approximately 5.5 miles west on the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. The trailhead is located immediately after exiting the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, with a small parking area on the right side of the road. Parking is limited, so arriving early or using the park's shuttle system during peak season is recommended.
Trail Description
The Canyon Overlook Trail begins at the trailhead with a set of stone steps that ascend the side of the canyon. The trail is well-maintained and marked, featuring a combination of sandstone, dirt, and wooden boardwalks.
As you hike along the trail, you'll pass through a series of short tunnels carved into the sandstone and walk along a cliffside ledge, offering views of Pine Creek Canyon below. The trail also features several interpretive signs that provide information about the park's geology, flora, and fauna.
After about half a mile, the trail reaches its endpoint at the Canyon Overlook, a large, fenced viewing platform that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the main canyon, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, and the surrounding sandstone cliffs. From the overlook, you can spot notable landmarks such as the East Temple, the Towers of the Virgin, and the Streaked Wall.
After taking in the stunning vistas, retrace your steps along the trail to return to the trailhead.
